Geeks - Let's Band Together to Help End Poverty
Today is Blog Action Day, which is a special day set aside for bloggers to talk about poverty. Being as blessed with opportunity as I have been in my life, it's sometimes difficult to imagine that there are people without gadgets, the internet and technology but more importantly - food, shelter, clean water and other basic needs. I think it's a wonderful call to action for us all to take a day and think about what we can do to help with world poverty. I think if everybody just did one or two little things either on a global or grassroots scale, the world would benefit enormously.
Here are some things that *I* pledge to do:
- Donate old PC's and PC equipment to an inner city school in my area
- Join the social networks Change.org and Causecast and learn about causes while connecting to others who may help to brainstorm solutions
- Make plans to volunteer my time at a local youth center or local mission to teach impoverished kids about technology, web design and other tech skills
- Bag up those canned goods and clean out those closets and deliver to local missions
- Donate to the Global Fund in honor of Blog Action Day
- Follow Blogactionday on Twitter and go visit other blogs discussing poverty today. I will post comments, and share those links on Twitter and Friendfeed. Exchange of ideas is a great way to get us all in the same mind set!
- Research some of the products I buy and try to find manufacturers who contribute to the fight against poverty
There - none of those are too hard! We can all make a difference. Here is a video that highlights some other actions that we as individuals can take to help fight poverty.
I hope we all can join together to make the world a better place!
